2018 Mustang GT Manual Trans Whine

Hey Guys,

My 2018 Mustang GT a 6-Speed Manual transmission and there has always been a little bit of transmission whine. Over the last week my transmission whine has gotten WAY louder in 1st through 3rd gear... there's no whine in 4th through 6th gear or in neutral.

I took it to my Ford dealer and did a 15 min test drive with their lead master tech. He was polite and attentive but said the amount of whine my car had was normal. I asked why mine had gotten louder over the last few days and he said he wasn't sure.

He told me obviously he makes his living on repair jobs so if he thought there was a problem he'd be the first to investigate. He went on to say he's been at this dealership for more than a decade and I can trust him.

They told me I had nothing to worry about but I'm not quite satisfied because I feel like there's something wrong. I've driven the car for 1 1/2 years and it's been the same up until a few days ago.

Only 17k miles on it and the car still shifts perfectly fine in any gear. The MT-82 is obviously not a well known for being a very reliable manual transmission... I've thought about testing a brand new one just to do a comparison test.... even though it's not that accurate since the car is brand new.... BUT it's been hard to find any dealers locally that actually have a Mustang GT with the MT-82 in it.

Any ideas on what I should look for or what direction to take this in?

Thanks for everything guys, take care!

Not going to be much you can do. Ford is going to say it is within spec, and the MT-82 is a piece of junk right out of the box. Now that you have it, may as well learn to live with it. Maintain it as best you can and realize you'll be living with issues as long as you own it. The only solution would be to swap to a Tremec unit, but then you still have the plasma lined cylinder wall issues in the motor.

The Mustangs just have way too many issues right now. I've owned two. They are fun to drive, but the constant issues get old real fast.

You could try changing the manual trans fluid.

@mod_man I was able to get the noise on camera last night.  https://youtu.be/vLW6s73X4R4           Definitely sounds like excessive tranny whine to me... what do you think? Like you said I know I won't accomplish anything by sharing this with Ford or anyone, but I just want other people to tell me my ears aren't crazy.... it's really loud for a street car.

Yep.....that's what both mine did. I too found it irritating but Ford said it is normal.

@Mod_Man Do you think changing out the transmission fluid is worth a shot like @toyotagrl suggested? Also what do you think of the Mach 1 that has a Tremec, but obviously still the Coyote Gen 3 with those Plasma lined Cylinders?

I'm done with Ford and Mustangs at this point. $50k for a GT is a joke, and the Mach is marked up even more. You can change the fluid but I didn't have a bit of luck with mine. It can't hurt though.
