It's hard to say. I know quite a few people with late model Subarus (no Ascents though) and they don't seem prone to problems, but the Ascent was brand new for 2019 so a lot of those could be first-year teething problems. (It's always best to avoid buying an all-new design the first year.)

The most serious issue I've read about is that the Ascent is prone to transmission problems, particularly the first year. I'd say the dealer is lying. Do an internet search on "Subaru Ascent transmission problems" and lots of info and complaints pop up. The software update they did may just be a bandaid to keep it limping along until out of warranty.

The Ascent has always had “big car/little engine” syndrome, but sounds like your problems go far beyond drive train.  Surprising, since it was such a slavish copy of the Highlander.

CT is right that the other Subaru models generally have above average reliability (they’re mostly very simple cars).  There is an old adage: “The best BMW is a little BMW.”  Subaru apparently went to school on that.
