I have a 1996 Lincoln town car. 121000 miles on it. Recently noticed steering wheel air bag cover material is very sticky to the touch. Tried cleaning it with alcohol . goo gone and dawn dish soap. Nothing helped. Seems like material is breaking down. Toyota had this problem in several of there vehicles. Sticky melting dashboard . any ides ?

I'm surprised Goo Gone didn't help. I had this issue with my 42 year old Pontiac up until 4th of July weekend, I got rid of the steering wheel stickiness by using a ton of Goof Off. I think it's from years and years of hand oils, drinks, food residue, dirt, etc getting in the material's crevices and creating a sticky, nasty mess. I had to scrub mine pretty good to get it all off. There are still some tacky spots, put it's much better.

It seems like whatever this material is , it is degrading and like it's melting. Read where toyota had this problem and they replaced the dash assembly. Heat or ultraviolet rays were involved. This car sits in a pole barn out of the weather. Just discovered this problem. Thanks for your interest and reply.

Try finding one at a junkyard, which is still in good shape (if at all).

I may have the fix. I spray painted it with Krylon paint and primer. Two coats and it looks good and smooth to the touch. Matte dark gray is the color. Hopefully this will help someone else repair airbag steering wheel cover feeling  very sticky to the touch after using several products to clean it
