My new 2020 RAV4 requires the 0w-16 oil. It has the 2.5 engine. Curious, why does this engine require that oil instead of the 0w-20 oil that the older 2.5 engines use?
I was just curious about it. Not complaining
This is just a wild guess on my part.
Methinks both engines can run fine on either 0W16 or 0W20. 0W16 is the newer oil so they will be pushing that.
This is not fact, this is my educated case: I also think 0W16 and 0W20 are for all intents and purposes, the same oil. Or very damn close to being the same oil. Just different labeling schemas.
With that said, I use the recommended oil from the manufacturer just to be safe.
Recommended is the 0w-16. Owners manual says you can use 0w-20 but switch to the 0w-16 on the next oil change. I’ll be going to Toyota for the oil changes since they will be free
