Hey Scotty, I currently have a 2007 Honda Accord EX V6 with 151,000. I want to give my accord to my mother and get myself a bigger car and can’t decide between the 2021 passport or the 2021 outback XT. Which is good and why
The Outback XT is both turbocharged and direct fuel injected. This likely means higher repair bills when it gets old. (Though at least it's a 2.4 liter, not a real tiny engine like some of them out there.) Depending on how long you intend to keep the car that may be something to take into account.
They’re both brand new so time will tell, if they’re good.
However, generally Hondas are superior vehicles when compared to the Subarus.
Test drive both & see which one you like better.
I agree with ITWT that Honda is nominally better than Subaru. But they are both good. People cross shop them but other than being quasi-outdoorsy wagony things, there are some big differences.
The passport is substantially larger, more powerful, and has a higher base price. The Honda sits higher, though I think the Subaru has better ground clearance. the Honda has a V6 and auto transmission; the outback has only 4 cylinder options and CVT (I believe).
Both have good road manners and good-ish off road performance. Both have good reliability in the first 150,000 miles; after that the Honda should pull ahead. IMO, the passport is drab inside and homely outside, whereas the Subaru’s exterior proportions are much more graceful, and the upper level interiors (especially touring level) are more handsome... but that’s just subjective.
honestly, you’ll be happy with either. Maybe just go with the one with the more ethical dealer.
Generally, Honda is better than Subaru. I'm suprised no body mentioned it but the new Passport is huge so it has lots of transmission issues. Keep that in mind. You might want to check out a Honda Pilot instead.
Subaru is also good but not as good as Toyota and Honda honestly neither are cars that would last 3 400k miles none of the newer cars are because of all the complexity of the powertrains.
The Subaru should be fine for 100k miles going off of track record and then the CVT would have problems, but the Passport would have transmission problems right out of the gate.
First recommendation would be to check out the Honda Pilot. Its between the size of the Outback and Passport, without the same degree of transmission problems. You also said you didn't need that much space so it would be kind of a waste IMO.
Thank you all. I test drove both and really enjoyed both of them. I do plan on keeping it for a long time. I was very surprised on how much room the passport has. I don’t need much room cause I am just a single person but I like how roomy both were.
