I’m replacing my 2005 Tacoma TRD off-road just wondering your thoughts on the 2022 Nissan frontier pro-4X?  I love the Tacoma‘s they’re just so overpriced right now. I know you’re not a big fan of Nissan mainly because of the CVT’s. I keep my cars for a very long time, I do like this new body style. Thank you Richard from Southern California

What’s wrong with your Taco?

A drunk driver hit it, thankfully it was parked. No injuries but totaled it.

AVOID!

As far as comments on the transmission, the trucks didn't have issues IN PAST GENERATIONS, new ones do!

There are already plenty of reports on Jatco's 9 speed rear wheel drive automatic being nightmare,

Both on the Frontier and Titan

Read the NHTSA complaints about the frontier:

https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2022/NISSAN/FRONTIER/PU%25252FEC/RWD#complaints

  • [NHTSA ID Number: 11467606] "Transmission failed catastrophically after 1300 miles of use"

  • [NHTSA ID Number: 11473373] "transmission shifted out of gear, the check engine light illuminated, and "automatic transmission fault" appeared on the center display"

  • [NHTSA ID Number: 11475484] Rear end or transmission has started to howl when deceleration occurs.

This car hasn't been out for a year and there are already 4 recalls for it 🤣 what a sad joke.

The Frontier seems to have a scalled down version of the Titan's transmission,

and that transmission was an utter piece of crap:

You're welcome to read to complaints on NHTSA on it too:

https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2021/NISSAN/TITAN%252520KING%252520CAB/PU%25252FEC/RWD#complaints

  • "The transmission would jerk and clunky when coming to a stop and vibrate, shifting hard upon acceleration. Dealership refuses to acknowledge the problem"

  • "The gears shift rough causing the vehicle to jerk or down shifting early causing a stall when imcreasing accelaration. It is dangerous when you cant accelarate at times to avoid cars or merging on to the highway. I took it in and Nissan said this was fine and everything seemed normal."

  • "Transmission failed shifting abruptly to first gear while driving in traffic. [...] vehicle returned after 1 week. [...] slammed back into 1st gear while driving causing similar issue in traffic. Vehicle back in dealership awaiting transmission from Nissan (13000mi)"

  • "There is a lot of lag while accelerating. Dealer looked over vehicle and worked with Nissan to check several things. The dealer techs all noticed the problem. They compared it to a new one and tne new one did the same thing"

  • "It is abrupt and harsh enough when coming to a stop to create a safety issue. If one is not hard on the brakes at the time, the truck will lurch forward with the last downshifts, with the potential to strike pedestrians or the car in front. My Titan has about 800 miles, and this behavior has been going on since I bought it recently."

If you want to be overpay, be ignored by the dealer and the manufacturer as if they're doing you a favor by even looking at your car, be at the mercy of the chance that Nissan will figure out what's wrong with the 9 speed AND maybe even agree to fix old units - there's no car like new Nissans with the 9 speed RWD Jatco.

Basically just get a Tachoma, the Frontier doesn't seem to be promising.

What the Nissan's are okay pickup trucks the trucks are much better than their cars and the trucks per se don't really have transmission problems like their cars

They are pretty good trucks and the new generation is pretty nice and attractive, but the only thing we will have to see is how the 9-speed will hold up, I would wait for the kinks to be ironed out. since it was redesigned for 2022. The engines should hold up since it is the VQ V6 engine that they have been making for decades and they hold up well if you take care of them.
