I recently purchased a new Camry TRD and the oil change program only will allow me to get my oil changed every 10k miles. I am not well versed on modern engines and if its safe to wait that long to change the oil or if I should go to my usual place and alternate from my local shop and the dealership between 5k mile intervals. Ive always changed my oil every 5k miles on every vehicle ive owned.

10K miles oil change is what's covered under 2 year/25Kmiles Toyota's free maintenance plan. If you want oil changed at 5K (strongly advised), it won't be covered and you'll have to pay out of pocket for it. The dealer will be glad to change your oil every 1k as long as you pay them 🙂 so you shouldn't really need to go elsewhere, jut tell them you want your first oil change done at 5K and that you'll pay for it. Mark the oil filter with magic marker to make sure they replaced it...
I have some friends with brand new Toyota’s that have 10K oil change intervals.
One friend doesn’t do anything extra. Just follows the book, every 10K. We’ll see how that engine does down the line.
Another friend did oil changes himself between the complimentary oil changes. This is the ideal, imho.
And one friend kinda did both. Initially she just did the complimentary oil changes every 10K, then switched to every 5K, after the complimentary was done. She still goes to the dealer, even though I tried to convince her to find an Indy shop. At least she is doing oil changes every 5K. She also had an oil change analysis done, and the analysis suggested she could go longer than every 5K, but why risk it?
