I have seen advertised oil filters that don’t have to be changed 20k miles or 1 year. I know the oil needs to be changed but what about the oil inside the filter. What do you think about these filters?
I would not wait that long - why risk it despite the claims by the manufacturer? You should always change the oil filter along with the engine oil every 5,000 miles or once a year (whichever comes first).
Thw whole idea of a filter is to catch carbon particles so they don't recirculate through the engine. This eventually clogs the filter so it's not filtering anymore, allowing unfiltered and dirty oil to go through and wear out you engine. Just do like DayWaker says and change it when you change your oil.
Leave an oil filter on for 20K miles or a year? The answer is not just "no", but h-e-double-hockey-sticks NO. (How much does an oil filter cost versus replacing your engine?)
I change out my filter with every oil change. No exception.
It is a super cheap way to make sure you are getting proper filtration. I always say never cheap out on maintenance or you'll wind up with expensive issues down the road.
Filters are so cheap. What's the point?
