So everybody will say tacoma but im doing alot of googling and alot of it comes up that the frontier is rated better than the tacoma? Im thinking of buying one of these. But it doesnt sound like any 23 nissan frontiers actually exist? Anybody got one or are they just a myth. Im personally leaning towards nissan.
You can still find the 2023 Tacoma; buy that one if you don't want to risk the new 2024.
Up to and including model year 2019 the Nissan Frontier was pretty solid and the engine and transmission combo until then were tried and true. Starting with 2020 MY when they changed the engine and transmission, all bets were off.
.
Stick to the older Frontier (MY 2019 and older) or the later years of the Toyota Tacoma. I would avoid the first few years of the new generation Tacoma until we learn more about what issues (if any) it has.
TBH, I’d be a little skeptical of both. While the engine in the Frontier is tried and true for the most part, the transmission is relatively new. And there have been some reports of problems with it. Don’t know if that is isolated or a thing.
The Tacoma is on a brand spanking new platform. Like it was the first of the platform to be created. And the Land Cruiser is the latest to be created. But the platform is so new. So no one really knows. Granted, it is a Toyota, and they usually have a better track record with new platforms, but they aren’t perfect.
If you really like the Frontier, I would highly recommend doing a deep dive on the transmission. And seeing if it is worth the gamble.
