Family is selling it, well treated with one owner. 2005 4x4 4.0L. He's asking 7k for it.
And I live in WA so the market for used cars isn't great here.
Sell it here in California, you'll get at least 15k for it lol. Well 7 seems steep to me for your area, I'm sure there is a better deal somewhere else if you are willing to look out a bit further.
If it was well treated and proper maintenance any car can last forever. There is also a huge difference in highway and city miles when it comes to odo of higher miles. For the Tacoma I would be worried about either the head gasket if it hasn't been replaced or transmission going out.
If you are still interested, get a proper full inspection done if you can't yourself. I don't trust the word of nobody if they trying to sell to me, worst case you lose a couple hundred to the mechanic rather then a full rebuild down the line.
Kinda a novice to the mechanic work stuff, I was planning to do a compression test and a general lookover, but would you recommend any specific tests?
Unfortunately not really that I would personally know of since 290 miles I'd still be inclined to believe you'd be looking for a trans pretty soon even if in pristine condition and very well taken care of. That's just the nature of engines that last forever. If that replacement down the line is worth it to you then I would go for it if you don't see anything super horrendous. Make sure the guy allows a full driving test as well. Go over bumps and all the truck things that it should be capable of. If not walk away. Use anything to your advantage if you are really serious, 7k is still steep due to the miles.

Answer "no".
290k miles is way too much.
