Help in looking at the internals of a cylinder of a 4Runner's 1GR-FE engine

83k.

Looks scary bad to me.  I have a warranty and, if this cylinder is considered "toast," I'll press for a painful refund because I don't think they'll disassemble the engine for new pistons/piston rings (if salvageable).

The piston is up high, I can only imagine what things would be like if it were low.

The only reason I went ahead with the purchase was the warranty and larger dealership backing. I gotta move now to have them fix it or should I forget it. If you comment, please state your experience (mechanic, you've seen this before, you're guessing, etc.).  I know Scotty lurks in these halls, but I'm not counting on a comment from the master 🙂

Why don't you put a 19 mm socket on the harmonic balanacer nose bolt and turn it to lower the piston to get a better picture?  Nice cross hatch pattern on the cylinder though.

I'll see if I can find and do that. I've seen something like that on another engine and a breaker bar was needed. That might make it a challenge. Thanks!!!

It's easy.

Easiest if you take all spark plugs out so you don't have to work against engine compression.

Googling Harmonic Balancer nose bolt location didn't do anything to show me really anything...

Is this the thing I gotta turn clockwise? (photo taken slightly to the passenger side of center over the coolant bottle and just to the center of the headlight housing.

No.  It is on the front of the crank shaft.  Turn it the same direction as the engine runs - clockwise.  To see what it looks like search auto parts stores for crankshaft pulley replacement part to see a picture of it, then you'll be able to find it on the car.

Thank you so much!

If I'm not mistaken, from memory, the crankshaft pulley is a 3-wheeled part. I'll confirm by Google. Unfortunately, googling a very specific thing sometimes brings up a bunch of ad-placed commercial stuff and "promoted" items not even related...

I have put additional videos if anyone wants to vicariously explore the cylinders (only on the ODD/passenger side as of this post). I did see something that looked like a scratch and there's oil streaks. My guess is that's a problem as well (since too much oil is bad).

Here's a playlist link of the various videos. I will update the playlist as I record more and revisit the already-recorded cylinders after I move them to a middle position turning the crank shaft. Chime in if you see anything that you have experience with good or bad.

By the way...  How weird is it that one piston top is clean and the other two are built up (presuming dry carbon and not oil, maybe???).

I did say Auto Part Stores, not a general google search.  Go to autozone.com, type in your vehicle identification and in the search box, type "crankshaft pulley."  You'll see a picture of your balancer.

Thanks for the tip, @Doc. I've confirmed that my "arrowed" item is that crankshaft pulley... My Saturday evening is booked now! After getting those pistons leveled out, I'll re-video them. While I hope that all is well with them, as I want this to be mine for the rest of my life, if I catch a problem, there's a supposed warranty that should at least get me a refund if they don't want to repair it:-)
