what are your thoughts on that? i came across a 4runner and very interested in it.
Also, what should i look for when purchasing a used vehicle from a private party.

It's 20 years old. How it's been treated and maintained over the last 2 decades is going to be more important than how reliable it was when new. You need to have a good mechanic give it a thorough examination before purchase.
