Hi there Scotty,

My name is Marina, I have a 2006 Nissan Altima SE 3.5 6 cylinder automatic. Recently I heard a tapping noise and I was told it was my timing chain quite a penny I come to find out that it's going to cost the car has over 200,000 miles on it should I go ahead and pay to do the timing chain on it or should I just have the engine rebuilt. Thank you for your time in this matter I am a girl that has worked on vehicles of my own but in this case I just don't know what to do...

Maybe. Maybe you should get a second opinion.

How much?

should I just have the engine rebuilt.

Rebuilding an engine takes days to do properly. The cost would very quickly surpass the value of your vehicle. (nobody does this except hobbyists)

That car is not worth the cost of a rebuilt engine. Who told you it was the timing chain? Usually those rattle when they get worn.

Well marina ive worked on cars too myself ( even rebuilt some transmissions on a toyota ) but timing belts must be replaced on a regular basis, but timing chains do not. Theres no reason to alter the timing chain unless its damaged, strained, or otherwise affected. If there is a problem with the timing chain, your car will most likely have one or more issues. For example it might cause the engine to stall or turn off and will be more vulnerable to catastrophic damage. Thank you for your time!
