I have a 1964 Ford Galaxie 352 with automatic transmission (bought new) and it has 78,000 miles on it to date. The gear shift leaver is hanging up in park. Sometimes, if I am lucky, I can get it out of park. Every thing works as it should unless I put it back in park. I have taken the linkage loose from the transmission and I can shift the transmission, by hand, very easily however the gear shift (column mounted) is still stuck in park. The car will crank if I can get it to shift to park or neutral.

Well, it seems that after 56 years the column shift mechanism is worn or out of adjustment. If you have a shop manual for that car (always a good thing to have with a classic vehicle) it may have a procedure for adjusting the shifter.
