Scotty,
I am looking into possibly purchasing a 1981 Chevy longbed pickup truck. I would value your opinion on it greatly and some advise on possible future situations would be great! The truck is 4x4 with ~140k miles. The current owner said that he bought it with a rebuilt engine and put 600-800 miles on it after purchasing it. He also said he had the transmission rebuilt about 2 years ago. The ask price is $8000. I am mainly interested in this truck as a project truck and possible collector In the future. I guess my question would be, what is your opinion about this truck? With both the transmission and engine rebuilt at certain points would it be dumb to think about purchasing this type of truck? What is the best thinking around purchasing cars with rebuilt drivetrain components? If the car was sensible to purchase what would be some main things I would look for if I were to see it in person?
I appreciate your help and love/appreciate the channel immensely!
I would ask to see verifiable paper work on these services. If the seller can prove this information and the truck checks out with a competent mechanic, I'd go for it and offer $4k and go from there. These older vehicles are very easy to work on, compared to the newer, electronically controlled disasters of today. There will be a snake pit of black vacuum lines going to a million places that will need to be checked. Good luck. I'm driving a 1981 pickup now I've had for 31 years.
