87 or premium?

I drive a 2008 lexusis250. It says in the manual to put premium unleaded fuel only. Your video on the different octane levels says to “check the manual” but you also say I don’t need to put premium in my gas tank unless I drive a lamborghini or ferrari. What’s the verdict? 87 or premium?

read it again.

it says:

Premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher required for optimum engine performance

In other words , you lose a few horsepower, which is exactly what Scotty always says.

Further along in the manual ...

If premium gasoline is not available If 91 rating gasoline cannot be obtained, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Rating 91).

You'll be fine. Just watch for knocking.

Thanks a bunch!

If it says use premium use only premium. If it said regular then it's a waste to use anything higher. Manufacturers don't spend millions in research just for fun. The fuel they recommended is the fuel that gives best performance ect ect. Using to low of a octane can cause pinging, poor mph, rough idle, stalling and even engine damage.

does the fractional economy improvement offset the higher price?

If your owner's manual says high-test gas is "required" that's what you should be using. If only "recommended" you have some leeway.
