Scotty, I'm looking at purchasing a 1993 Toyota MR2 turbo with 60,000 mi on it. It's had the full engine out service done to it.

Can you give me your thoughts on this car? Positives and negatives please.

Thank you

If the guy got paperwork and picture proof then I'd say it's a good deal. Well depending on the price I guess. Got a buddy that fully Frankenstein and rebuilt his. Though his is a 92 I think?

Pros:

  • fun little mid engine turbo car
  • Great handling due to being mid engine, canyon carving and the what not
  • Pretty quick, I believe these only came in a manual option? So 6ish 0-60 if you care for that
  • Not too many issues being a Toyota and all that, worst engines I believe we're specifically the 2001 celica GTS cause they were the Yamaha engines.

Cons:

  • mid engine turbo car - just in general turbo options don't last as long as naturally aspirated and include that extra maintenance item EG-the turbo.
  • Harder to work on being a mid-engine car, especially if you are a big dude
  • Common ignition key/barrel failed at 100kish miles
  • Some problems with EGR system, varies on the person, same buddy took at least 2 days to replace all the parts but I think he just got a bad egg
  • Get a good shift bushings as the originals are kinda crummy over time

Having lived with a 93 NA MR2 ,I'd offer these comments. Great fun to drive. Surprisingly practical - tall people fit, groceries and luggage no big deal, parts and service not that difficult to find. Biggest negative - awfully noisy for cruising. Thinking of putting in some sound-deadening material as my next project.
