Bought a '96 Taurus LX Wagon for a whopping $300 from single owner with 86k mi. a few years ago. I've only put 2k miles on it. It's mechanically great. There's a leaking A/C compressor seal, and the interior lights stay on permanently when the relay is in, but that's not my issue...

Some time ago, it stopped shifting from 3-4. It only shows one code: P0761. I can't get to O/D anymore. Do you think it's the solenoid, or the infamous retainer clip, or something else? What should I expect to pay to have it fixed?

It's otherwise a great car and I don't want to have to replace it! Is it ok to drive around town in it's current condition if I can't afford the repair? What's your advice?

Thanks!

Often it is a retainer clip but it cost a fortune to tear the transmissions down and rebuild them for the money you pay for that thing. My advice would be just driving then when it breaks junk it it's not really worth fixing
