erratic idle, will not rev over 2500rpm

Hello all, I have a 97 Altima GXE automatic. It idles poorly revs, going up and down, will not rev over 2500rpm and super rich mixture. OBD scanner for MAF sensor reads 275.6 all the time. When I disconnect the MAF plug, the idle normalizes but still will not rev over 2500. Tried a new MAF sensor with exact same results. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

First thing I would do would be to pressure test the catalytic converter. You have an oxygen sensor removed and put a pressure gauge there. If the catalytic converter is clogged up, it will do exactly that.

Thank you very much, never thought of it. I'll do that. Best regards.

Update:

I removed the O2 sensor and started the car. It acted exactly the same so I believe the cat converter is not blocking the exhaust.

Curiously, after reinstalling the O2 sensor, the idle normalized but it still wont rev over 2500 rpm. And if I open the throttle too fast, it backfires.

So, still in need of help.

Best regards,
