97 F150 Transmission Shudder

My 97 F150 (4.6 v8, 4R70W tranny, around 180000 miles) shudders sometimes between 30 and 45mph. If I manually put it in second gear it doesn't do it. Sometimes stepping on the gas to make it shift down and back up will stop the shudder for a short time. On occasion it will do it at higher speeds after it has downshifted to pass someone or after going over a hill. A friend told me his did that and he replaced the pressure sensor in the transmission and that fixed it. What are your thoughts?

BTW: The transmission fluid is very clean and red like it should be.

If you have a friend that says he can fix it and you trust him to work on your truck just realize your gambling just opening the transmission at all. But it's a 97 the trucks worth practically nothing so you don't a lot to lose. GL

  • @jacksonishere I didn't ask if you thought it was ok for my friend to open my transmission. I would do that myself (and yes I trust myself to do it). I was asking if the pressure sensor would cause this problem.

@concretesnowman
Your going to have to open the transmission to find out.... I don't have x-ray vision.

As a simple test, try a tube of shudder fix made by Lubegard. Part number is 19689. I had this same transmission doing the same thing. Fluid looked good but friction modifiers were worn out. This is a temporary fix. If it helps, you will need to drain and refill the transmission and torque convertor with new Mercon V fluid. I did this and it worked perfectly.

I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you. I will try this in the next week or two. I can already tell your answer is more helpful than the last guy. {black}:crazy:
