I was checking out a used 99 4runner (3.4L V6 EFI, 200k, automatic). The car looks like in a great shape, except every time I shift between R and D, the car makes a loud noise and shakes a bit. No noise or shaking when shifting between D, 2, and L. Is it an indicator of transmission going bad, worn mounts, or both? How can I tell the difference? Thank you.

You can check the engine and transmission mounts first, but also you should have a mechanic check the transmission as well. The mileage is a bit high and if the truck is abuse, odds are that the transmission can have issues.
