My friend helped teardown a 5.3 ls and he didn't mark pistons. Question is. . . Do they have to go in in the same order after the block has been honed and new rings fitted?

Its pretty important. You could try and match the wear marks up, else you could measure the bores and pistons and drop them back in a hole that gives the correct piston to wall clearance and see how it goes. What about the bearings and caps? Did you mix those up too?

He mixed everything up. Thinking new rod bearings. If new piston rings are installed, won't those seat to the current bore?

Yes but you still need the correct clearances

Soo..measure each piston and match to closest cylinder measure ment?...maybe I'll just buy new pistons for $300.
