I bought a 99 Subaru legacy outback with 265000 miles on it and a 5 speed manual transmission. When I shift into first and take off at a certain rpm the instrument cluster lights shut off. Can't see anything. Any other ideas why before I go and pull the cluster out?

well first of your battery and alternator load tested one could be weak but if not it's probably a loose wiring connector somewhere when you take off it makes it lose power especially check the ground wiring for the instrument cluster
