A/C lack of communication

I have a 2007 Chevy Tahoe 4wd AT with a 5.3L with 200k miles. The A/C stopped working all of a sudden when my wife was driving. She went to a shop because it threw a code. The tech that looked it over was a Rockstar and cleared the code, didn't write it down, and couldn't remember the number. He said it was a lack of communication to A/C compressor. I can't get it to work normally. I checked belt, clutch, fuses, relay, wiring that can be reached without tearing climate control out. I bypassed relay and got compressor to run long enough to check refrigerant which was all good. My question is there any way, that I haven't checked,  to make sure the climate control is the issue without tearing apart an old plastic dash? Any help or insight is appreciated.

How did you check refrigerant?

You would probably need a scan tool capable of bidirectional testing, for that vehicle a GM Tech2 or equivalent.
