I just wanted to ask . My mother has an old ford ranger that the ac is real weak . She was talking to this guy that people said he was a ford mechanic. He took a look at the truck and said it had a leak , so he took it to his house for a few hours and came back and said the leak was fixed on the ac system . I just think he did not fix anything . if it had a weak ac ,it needed to be recharged , am I right ?and opening the system to fix a leak doesnt help anything . I just think she was scammed and wanted to know what your thoughts are .

He needs to fix whatever is leaking in order to recharge the system. That also needs to be a very precise amount of refrigerant, which is best done with a completely evacuated system. You can't just willy nilly dump refrigerant into the low side Schrader valve, it'll just leak out again, unless you fix the leak.

You didn't mention how old the truck is or what "this guy" charged for servicing the AC. If it needed to be recharged it could well have had a leak, but depending how old it is it could have been simply due to not having been maintained over the years. (They all leak a little bit over years of time.) Hopefully the "guy" checked for leaks first, fixed any, then recharged the system with the correct amount of refrigerant.
