Acura MDX a good reliable used car?

My wife and I are looking at getting either a 2015 or 2016 Acura MDX. She wants a 2016 because she likes the button shifter but I worry about it being the first year they used the 9 speed transmission. Being a Honda product I figure they hold up pretty well and seem to be a generally liked vehicle. Anyone have any major pros/cons on these models?

You are right about the transmission. Between those, I would get the 2015 model year.

Thank you!

I don't like these 9/10 speed transmissions, they are  constantly searching for the right gear, its annoying IMO

That was my concern. And the MPG isnt even rated any higher on most websites.

The 9 speed transmission was sourced by ZF. It’s not a Honda transmission.

I recommend looking into the specific transmissions for the models you are looking at. The ZF 9 speed is shared between other models and also other makes.

There were problems with them in terms of shifting, but I don’t think in terms of reliability. ZF claimed it was a software issue, not a mechanical issue. The ZF 9 speed is still placed in new cars today, so there may have been some veracity behind the software issue. Supposedly a software upgrade will solve the problem.

With that said, while Honda makes amazing engines, direct injection engines may be prone to carbon build up. It’s not a big deal if one maintains the valves with cleaner.

My friends have a previous Honda Pilot, which uses an extremely similar engine to the MDX. And they engine has held up well over the last 6 years.
