Acura MDX Airbag Increased Resistance

2011 Acura MDX with 85,000 miles original owner - never in accident - Took car into independent mechanic for routine service visit, oil/filter change, check various systems, etc. On the way home, Airbag System warning lights up. This has never happened before. Returned car to mechanic and they reset the system. Next day light came on again.

Returned again and they ran some diagnostics which returned a 11-21 code, "(INCREASED RESISTANCE IN THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG FIRST INFLATED)". I was told they need to replace the Cable Reel and driver side Air bag at a cost of around $2,000.

It seems strange that this light came on after the service visit. Is there something that the mechanic could have done (intentionally or unintentionally) that could create this issue?

Is there anything that I can check to see if there is actually a problem?

I see, a simple trip to the mechanic now turns into a $2,000 fiasco.

These are just my opinions.

My guess is he tampered with it.  You returned with the check engine light on and they cleared it.  That's total nonsense.  Clearing a code does nothing if the issue isn't diagnosed properly and corrected.  Google how to check the connections, he may have loosened something up to trip the code.

If it was me, I would not go back to him for any reason.  Something is not right with his work.
