I just changed the oil on my grandparents car, a 2005 Chevrolet Uplander with 190000km. The oil has not been changed for a long time, over 5 years, and I am not sure if the km, but I believe the km when the purchases the vehicle was close to 140000. Now the engine makes a ticking noise. Would it be harmful or beneficial to the engine to try and add a slightly thicker oil such as 10w40? It calls for 5w30. I think at this stage the engine is already damaged so it may be worth a try.

If the engine has variable valve timing using anything other than the manufacturer-specified grade of oil can mess up the cam phasers.

Stick to what the owner’s manual indicates.
