My wife's car is a 2009 Buick Lacrosse, 3.8l Engine, automatic trans, with 168k miles. We live in SE Kentucky and on the way back from Cincinnati for Christmas the transmission started messing up. We got home and the code came back as a P0741 Torque Converter. It is at the transmission shop now. Something weird happened on the way to Cincy though and it happened on the way taking it to the Transmission shop. All the electric went off and back on, but the engine still ran and accelerated while the electric was off. None of the electric has dimmed though and the battery is showing the correct volts. Only code that came back was the P0741 on a full scan. First thought was an alternator, but I had alternators go bad before and the engine shut off with the electric.

Have your alternator tested and the battery as well. If alternator output is low or unstable, or the battery is bad, it can cause all kinds of electrical symptoms in modern computerized cars.

so which things lost power?

Have you checked your fuses?

The whole car loses power. Dash and headlights go completely out, but the car keeps running.
