Sluggish acceleration, possible clutch problem?

Been driving a 2006 Corolla with 138,660 miles and standard transmission. Experiencing sluggish acceleration...especially after shifting into second gear. No engine code appeared. Drove to Daytona Toyota where diagnostics revealed clutch needs replacing.

They advised $2606.00 to replace clutch assy and $577.00 for flex plate. Said I would go home and think about it.

Afterwards, took Corolla to two repair shops close to my home where both quoted under $2000 but using aftermarket parts.

My question is...It is ok to use after market parts for a clutch replacement on my beloved Corolla?

Drove to Daytona Toyota

The dealer is the last place to take 19-year-old car to for service. A good independent mechanic is a much better choice. Is the clutch slipping? If not then it's not a clutch problem.

Did they also diagnose the problem as a clutch or did you just ask for a clutch replacement quote?

As long as they are quality parts it's no problem. However as I said if your clutch is not slipping then that's not the source of the problem.

Been experiencing issues w/clutch for a while now. Knew it would need to be replaced eventually but did not know poor acceleration was a sign. Mechanic at Toyota advised clutch is slipping. And....They have been VERY GOOD at diagnostics in the past.

Thanks so much for the info...much appreciated!

@ann-belislegmail-com The reason I asked is that a clutch slipping enough to cause an acceleration problem would usually be very noticeable from behind the wheel. (Engine would rev up but road speed would not increase correspondingly.) If you do have a bad clutch hopefully replacement will resolve the issue, but there are many other things that can cause a loss of power.

Yes, that is exactly what's happening. Car revs up but does not move forward at a normal speed.

@ann-belislegmail-com OK, clutch it is then.
