Another stupid CVT question...

Recently, bought a used 2021 Rouge from the dealer and THEN read about the problems with CVT transmissions.  So, I'm committed to being diligent on fluid changes every spring before the summer heat.  Also, since I don't know if the fluid was changed before (currently at 32k miles), I just took it to the dealer yesterday to have it changed.   I said, just want to confirm, you'll change the fluid and the filter?  They said, No, we don't do that anymore.  There's a Nissan TSB stating that transmission filters should not be changed.  That makes no sense to my dumbass self... Can you explain why that's the case (other than a TSB says so)

I couldn't find that TSB. Call the dealer and ask them for a copy of that TSB

There's a Nissan TSB stating that transmission filters should not be changed.

Nonsense. Here's the Nissan TSB site: https://www.nissan-techinfo.com/tsb/tsb_xml/nmindex.aspx?tsbtype=ai

Using 'transmission' as a keyword, I found no corresponding TSB related to transmission filters.

Change the fluid and filter.

I called my local Nissan dealer and spoke with the service manager. I asked him if they changed the CVT filter when they changed the CVT fluid. He said, "No. It's a sealed unit and we do pump and fills and that's all. That's what we do on all new cars, including a 2021 Nissan Rogue. {black}:suspicious:

First off, don’t take the vehicle to any stealership.  They don’t know much and you have trained monkeys working there.

.

Second, those CVTs are the weakest link on those vehicles and should have fluid changed every 30,000 miles.

.

Find a good independent shop to do the work for you.

I suspect that they are liars or idiots. Probably both.

Your Jatco CVT8 transmission should have a drain plug for easy draining of the fluid. The paper filter is conveniently accessed under a cover on the side of the transmission. You don't even need to remove the pan, and it costs $10.

Just do it yourself.

I don’t know how easy or hard it is to change the filter.  It could very well be sealed, and it would take an effort to get to the filter.

If you can easily and cheaply change the filter, do it. If it really is a cumbersome and expensive job, maybe do the fluid exchanges more frequently.
