No, Honda's aren't particularly expensive to repair. It is the European cars that are expensive to repair.
Your relative probably had a bad experience with a honda. That's a small sample though compared to the million others that are ight. In general, hondas are one of the cheapest to fix unless you live in a place that don't have too many of em around.
Hondas are generally pretty reliable cars. But given the age of the car, you should have a trustworthy mechanic give it a look for you. There are many wear and tear parts that should be replaced timely. Check the maintenance records. If it is well maintained, go for it.
