AWD, any benefit in rainy conditions ?

Hey Scotty !

You regularly warn us that AWD is not that useful in the winter, appropriate tires and front wheel drive will do the trick.

Two years ago when I bought the Mazda 3 2.0l Skyactive-X I favored the AWD version because in the North France, where I live, it's always raining.

Did I make a mistake ? Am I crazy for thinking that it actually helped me a couple of times, during extreme raine conditions, keep control of my car ?

Thanks !

No you’re not crazy. AWD does help.
it’s up to you and your situation if the benefits are worth the added cost.

Yes, it makes a difference in heavy rain and other kinds of slippery conditions, but of course there's more to go wrong and typically you'll use more gas.

these days the difference in fuel consumption is insignificant

My 2021 Ridgeline is AWD and it DEFINITELY helps in the rain. I can imagine it is better in other hazardous conditions as well, but for sure it's great on wet pavement.

So were my AMC Eagles when I had them.
