Hi! I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra that I recently purchased. Among other problems, the Bank 1 Catalyst needs replacing, according to the diagnostics. (It has all original cats, and is at 163k). The service center wants $1600 for the replacement, but it will take me about 4 months to put that kind of money together, and I need to drive the car NOW (only one I have.) Is there any mitigating repairs or fixes (legal ones, I'm not gutting the cat) that I can do to keep my pony running while I scratch up the replacement cost? Thanks.

Get a scan tool that has live data. You could have vacuum leaks, etc on a 17-year-old car. Oxygen sensors could be bad, you could have exhaust leaks... catalytic converters are designed for the lifetime of the car. Nissan catalytic converters can be weak, but they still must meet the minimum standard. Do some troubleshooting, don't gamble $1600 and lose.
