I have a 2002 LS1 5.7 litre chev V8 that gets a bad lifter rattle every now and then.Whats a good additive to help stop this.
Clarification: Model vehicle and mileage?
I am in australia so your not going to know the car, anyway its a 2002 WH Holden caprice with about 280000 km,s
Nothing can really be put in engine oil to quiet down a bad lifter and stop it from making noise. They're hydraulic and wear out over time, causing that annoying tick.
I have been told the oil tunnels etc are small and get clogged up so need something to clean these out
I have worked on and own many LS engines and if the lifters are ticking, you need to replace them. A lot of people will advocate for a band aid fix, but there is not one for a problem as serious as that. And the longer you go, the more damage you are doing.
Years ago my uncle was driving his early 90s Escort and had a lifter go bad on the 4-banger engine, and it stopped running entirely when he was around 40 miles from home. It'd fire on 3 of the 4 cylinders then stall as soon as that 4th one missed.
Only way I know of is to replace all the lifters with new hydraulic. I guess there are chemical additives that are added to the oil to try to help this but when I have this kind of problem, I want to solve it, not delay it.
