We have a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and the car won't start. We're pretty sure it's the starter (the car has power). The engine attempts to turn over, but it stops and starts making all kinds of clicking sounds. How do we make sure it's just the starter and not the flywheel?
Thank you
how do I hotwire test
Run a couple of wires directly to the starter motor from a battery.
Nice test of a starter solenoid, a starter : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiNek1DIBYc
The other way to test it is to tap on the starter. Scotty has a few videos on that. If you turn the key and have someone tap on the starter with a rod or something and it starts, then you know it’s the starter
Have you load-tested the battery and alternator?
No. The battery still had plenty of charge. We tried jumping it, and it still made the clicking sounds.
Load test the battery. If it has an internal problem jump starting may not work. You can also try hot-wiring the starter solenoid to test the starter.
This is going to sound dumb, but how do I hotwire test. I can't see where the starter is. I haven't used a hotwire since my 1976 Datsun 610. Wire with alligator clips to start the motor.
Disconnect the trigger wire on the starter solenoid and attach a jumper from that solenoid terminal to +12V terminal on the battery. Of course to do that you need to be able to locate and reach the starter and the battery has to be good.
Make sure the donor battery has similar or higher CCA to the one you're trying to jump or it may not work. Happened to me recently and we ended up putting it on a trickle charger overnight.
The batteries of both cars were weak, so we replaced both batteries. All is good for now. Lol
That would definitely do it! That's why we always suggest testing batteries for this kind of problem.
Thank you all for your help. I wish I knew where my head was. It certainly wasn't in the game; that's for sure. You all saved us a bunch of cash. Until the next time I need help, thank you all very much!

it's better to have the donor car engine running
