What are good engine choices for an Audi A8? People said the 3.0 TFSI V6 and 3.0 TDI V6 are good. What about the 4.2 FSI V8 or 4.0 TFSI V8?
The V8s are stronger engines although they are gas hogs. They do have some issues with carbon build-up, especially the 4.2 V8s but other than that those engines are pretty dependable. Don't buy an A8 with a V6 since its gonna wear out faster and the TDI adds an insane amount of complexity, they are nothing like the older TDI engines.
Thank you. The reason I asked about the supercharged 3.0 V6 is because they are the most dependable engine since it’s supercharged and not turbocharged like the 2.0 4-cylinder engine.
those are pretty good, I got a friend with an Audi A6 with that engine, and it's been pretty dependable.
I guess the 4.2 FSI V8 is the better option. Maybe the 3.0 TFSI V6 is better in the A6.
Whatever you do, lease don’t buy the Audi, then return before the warranty expires. Regardless of powertrain, they all have an insane amount of electronics on board that will give issues over time (it’s a matter of when, not if). Best to have under warranty and let Audi take care of on their dime. Audi already knows most of their customers lease their vehicles.
The v8s are much stronger engines the one you picked just depends on how much speed you want
Thank you, Mr. Scotty. But which Audi V8? A naturally aspirated 4.2 V8 or a turbocharged 4.0 V8
@Sonic-Max definitely avoid the turbocharged V8 as that engine has cylinder deactivation (or what Audi calls Cylinder on Demand or COD). Link: https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/postid/80399/ Over time it can potentially cause wear and tear to your engine, so best to avoid that (unnecessary) technology.
Can you pay an honest mechanic like Scotty to disable it completely with a dealer level computers?
@Sonic-Max I have no idea on Audi’s. On GM, Honda cars - it’s fairly easy to disable (even a DIYer can do it himself). But on German cars, especially Audis, I am not sure what is involved - you would have to research it.
