Best Vehicles to Tow 4K Camper

Hey Scotty,

I am in the market for a used truck or SUV that we can use to take road trips on with a camper. We’re looking at buying something 3-5 years old with 40k miles or less, but want to know your thoughts on a comfortable SUV with a solid transmission that’ll last 150-200k miles with little to no issues.

Be careful that the camper is actually 4k lbs. Often times that is fully dry weight, and when you load it with much of anything, you can easily push over 5k. Just water will add hundreds of pounds.

Companies know they can sell more campers when the weight is low, so they often make it seem as light as possible on paper.

The only SUV I could think of would be a Sequoia, they often have 7k tow rating. I wouldn't try it though if the camper went over 5k. It can be dangerous towing something that can push you around.

Where all the 4,000 lb trailer is a reasonable amount of weight. Toyota's made great vehicles, but unless you're talking about buying one of their trucks, I would not advise buying an SUV to tow that kind of weight. But if you don't mind a truck, get a Tacoma or a tundra
