Bizarre Starter Shim Occurrence on my 1975 GMC Vandura

Hey Scotty I had a very strange starter shim occurrence with my 1975 GMC Vandura. When I bought it I was told it needed a starter shim, so when I went out and bought a starter shim and was surprised to find out that it didn’t help the noise level whatsoever I assumed it just needed another starter shim. Anyways, so about a week after I put the first one in I ended up having to put 2 more in and to my absolute unbelief, it didn’t help the noise level whatsoever. In fact, I think it might have made it work. Anyways, so when I discovered that I removed all 3 starter shims and and tried starting it and once again, to my unbelief, it fixed the problem (the noise). What in the hillbilly hell is going on?

did you check the clearance?

Sometimes you only half shim the outboard side.
