What fun, zippy project car?

I am looking to buy a small, fun, zippy car, manual, that I can just have fun with and do some modifications on in California. I have a Tacoma as a staple car so this is purely pleasure. What would you recommend below $10K for something fun, reliable, nice to work on? I am trying to keep in mind the following:

- Ease of getting parts

- Something that most any mechanic could help work on, nothing specialized

I was originally thinking a MR2 but they seem hard to find in good condition, though that motor is supposed to be one of Toyota's best. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!

VW Beetle! hands down!

AMC Gremlin

65-69 Corvair

75 Buick Skyhawk

VW Karman Ghia

VW Thing

Cool thing about the Gremlin is they were available with a factory V8. It was just a 304 cid, but a 360 or 401 will drop right in its place.

Besides the usual (MR2, Miata, Civic SI) maybe a Mazda 3, and get a Mazdaspeed JDM motor?

Civic Si is a good choice.

The MR2 is a pain to work on and parts are tough to come by at times. It is also very cramped inside.
