Did BMW cars become more reliable than Mercedes in the last few years, or did Mercedes drop their quality?

I drive a '21 X3 M40i, I love it. But I know it's not gonna last me, at all. Neither will a Mercedes. But probably BMW would be your best bet. Now neither are gonna be reliable, so if you're gonna get either one, lease it. Or if you have the money and can afford the horrible deappreciation, buy one. But DO NOT get a used BMW or Mercedes. Both vehicles are still very nice if you don't talk about reliability.

BMW has pretty much always been more reliable than Mercedes, but the last few decades the gap has really widened.

Right on! I still remember by mate’s 2012 C200.. it was 3yrs old at the time, still under warranty, <30,000 miles & it needed $5000 worth of work..

I know man it is crazy. Mercedes is one brand I'd still like to own and never have, but when I keep seeing these low mileage, expensive repairs....I can't justify it.

Driving someone else’s Mercedes is more than enough for me..

@InThrustWeTrust I can sit in Mercedes as a passenger, but I will never drive someone else's car lol.

I only drive a friend’s car who I know well/trust their car’s condition. If is a stranger’s car, yeah no thanks..

At the end of the day despite the relative ‘reliability’ of one over another, both are still money pits out of warranty.  If you are considering them, just lease while it is still under warranty and get out of your system.

They both decided to jump, since the 2000s..

Until 2010 Mercedes was more reliable as per my experience, but in the later models BMW was more reliable, at the end of the day it looks like there both money pits and maybe it’s just a matter of how lucky\unlucky one could end up with one of these cars

Yup, if you want to get a German vehicle, lease one brand new & get rid of it before you’re out of warranty. I have seen more than enough horror stories to never want to buy these..even brand new.

I always thought of BMW as reliable, BUT as a money pit.

Repairs cost an arm, leg, and torso.

ALL cars can become "Money Pits". I have owned 5 BMWs; and the only expensive repairs were done through, or by a BMW Dealer. I found a good reliable BMW outfit. The mechanics are BMW trained. They do good work and are always reasonable. My comparison is based on my experience with GM, Ford and Toyota dealers. But then again there are honest shops and those who will take advantage of the unsuspecting.
ALWAYS have any car checked out by a reliable mechanic. Before you buy. Look at the list of questions listed here. I see very few questions about any BMW [except for 4 cyl turbo]. I know that Scotty hates German cars, but he hates English cars as well He also gives valid reasons for his dislike.
BUT I love BMWs. I perform routine maintenance and I feel that they are reliable and don't surprise me!

Totally. I had an Second Generation X5. Totally reliable. But also cost me more to maintain than a Honda or Toyota.
