Brake caliper life span

Hey Scotty. What's the average lifespan of a brake caliper in a vehicle? I am a tow driver for AAA and I had to tow a 2017 Chevy Volt last night, member told me that the car only has 36k miles on it and that's way too low for a caliper to go out. I guess GM's quality isn't there at all as you previously mentioned on your videos. TIA for your response

They definitely aren't made like they used to be. My 1979 Pontiac Catalina had the original calipers up until I replaced them this year. They were seized from sitting for several years. They and the wheel cylinders were originally made in my hometown. All in China now, and the factory is a field.

I imagine the Volt doesn't utilize the hydraulic brakes very much, being that it has electric regenerative braking. Things that don't get used tend to seize up.
