2006 HHR, 2.4: 102k.

Took car in for North Carolina annual inspection& emissions. All OK, but mechanic said my brake fluid is a "dirty" dark brown and should be changed soon. It is chocolate brown. Will this affect braking system ? Car brakes fine & same mechanic said brake pads are good.

Generally 3-4 yrs. Brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water).  Since it's dark brown it's time to get new fluid in there.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture which over time can damage brake system parts. If you change it every few years you'll have fewer problems with your brakes' hydraulic system.

Change it. 3 yrs is the general rule for brake fluid. Just really depends how well that cap seals. There’s people that’ll go 100k before the fluid gets nasty. Brake fluid should be clear or look like a coors banquet color.

Thanks to all that replied to my brake fluid question. I will get it changed. Something that is easily overlooked.
