Can these two be used interchangeably? Or should I stick with one specifically for engine or brakes, respectively?

So you bought both or...?

What are you trying to do?

Are there not usage instructions on the can?

I wouldn't be spraying brake cleaners around the engine bay too much. It dissolves some plastics on contact.

Yikes. I haven’t bought either. I saw some of the brake stuff on sale for ½ the price of the engine stuff. Just wondering if they can be used beyond what is suggested on the label. I usually just stick to what the label says, but curious is if there is off label uses.

Brake cleaner is specifically designed not to leave residue that can affect brake operation.

I have noticed over the last  year that responses from MoountainManJoe are sometimes short and to the point and exhibit a certain lack of patience.  I have also noticed that every single one of his responses has  been absolutely correct and accurate.  There are few people on this forum who exhibit the experience, knowledge and wisdom he does.  The only time I gave Joe a down vote, I was wrong. My point is this, if you are fortunate enough to get a response from Scotty or MountainManJoe, pay attention.  This is demonstrably valuable advice.

I hate over-talking things
🤷‍♂️

I know, but credit goes where credit is due.  Sorry to be so verbose.

it's fine. I was referring to my tendency to get straight to the point.

Of course.

I think Scotty and MMJ are opposite sides of the same coin. Both are extremely knowledgeable, but one is verbose, and the other is concise.

I’m guessing MMJ doesn’t flail is arms around when he is speaking because he would have no time to with such brevity.

If you're looking for an engine degreaser for cleaning up oil, CRC Engine Degreaser at Walmart is pretty awesome stuff. It's potent enough to clean combustion products and crud off of pistons and doesn't harm your skin. I'd shy away from using chemicals meant for one system on another, just because of how specialized and finicky things are.

GTK. It is mainly engine external stuff I am trying to clean up.

That CRC stuff will do the job. It just sprays on, foams, and then goes down to soapy water. I needed to clean up a piston for a decoration project and that's why I tested it out on that kind of part, lol.

  1. They should not be used interchangeable.

So probably not a good idea to use engine stuff for the brakes.

probably best to use brake cleaner on brakes, and engine cleaner on engine, eh? 💡

Yeah. I heard an old tale that it could be used interchangeably. Well, at least the brake kleen for the engine, thought I’d run it by you guys first before I purchased any.

I am specifically looking for engine degreaser to remove clean oil leak and and grease from a CV broken boot. I hadn’t realized that stuff got on the engine and transmission nook and cranny until I was taking a peak.

free undercoating! 😉

Make sure you put some glasses on when you use any of this stuff. It burns for a long time if you get it in your eye.

GTK. Thanks!
