1992 Jeep Comanche Brake noise

I have a 1992 Jeep Comanche 4x4 with rear drum brakes.  The rear drum brakes were making a thumping noise when putting on the brakes, so I just installed new brake shoes, hardware and new brake drums, and put grease on all the contact points.  When I put on the brakes, they still make the same noise.   Any suggestions?

Are the contact points on the backing plates worn down? (Would not be surprising after 30 years especially if not lubed over the decades.) If so the new brake shoes won't be aligned properly inside the drums and will shift around when you hit the brakes.

Other than that are you sure it's the brakes? Could be your rear driveshaft u-joints or slip joint.

It's something sticking in your driveline , not the brakes. You feel it when braking because that torques the driveline in the opposite direction than acceleration.

Thanks for the tips.  The back plates were not worn down, and I did lube them.  Will take your suggestions and check the other parts.
