Buying a car from a private seller.

My previous car purchases were from licensed dealers so I didn't have to worry about temporary tag or stuffs like that. So I see lot of listings on Facebook/offerup but most of them are private sellers. So if I buy a car from them , how can I drive the car back home with no license plates? And I know the owner of the car are gonna take the plates away for safety concerns. I live in Houston Texas. Any help appreciated.

Check the temporary tag policy in the state the car is being sold in. I've bought cars from out-of-state private sellers on several occasions. After being satisfied that the vehicle was roadworthy, I just made sure it had insurance coverage and obtained temporary tags from the seller's local DMV for the trip home. (Also I have AAA for towing just in case of problems on the road.) If buying the car from within your own state check your own state's temporary tag law.

You could also opt to just have the car towed home. That's obviously more expensive but has the benefit that you don't have to worry about the car breaking down on the way home.

Beware of scammers, particularly on Facebook. You would be hard-pressed to find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

@chucktobias thanks

@chucktobias I read that right away in Obi-Wan's voice, haha.

I don't know what the rules are in Texas, but when I bought my Ranger, I bought it in Kentucky, and I'm in Ohio. I had my now-wife drive me down there, I wound up buying the truck and my wife followed me back to the DMV. I had the title in my hand and if a cop were to pull me over. I had an excuse for not having license plates yet-I was going right to the DMV to pick them up. Just be honest with them, if you wind up getting pulled over.
