Hi Scotty,
I'm a full-time student working a full-time job and saving up for a truck. Is it really worth $15,000-$20,000 CAD to buy a used '07 to '11 Tacoma with 200k plus kilometers on it? That just seems rediculous for a weekend warrior truck. I just want to make sure I spend my hard earned cash on something affordable and reliable.
Thanks,
Christian
Look at the math: Initial cost plus maintenance and repair cost minus resale value with the result divided by kilometers driven.
Low up front costs don't save you any money long-term if they need lots of repairs and aren't worth anything when you sell them. That said, Scotty often recommends a Ford ranger as a low-cost option.
Thanks for the help everyone. I ended up going with a 2005 4x4 V6 Tacoma with 235,000km (150,000 miles) and a recent frame replacement from Toyota. It runs solid and has all the features I need. Ended up paying $12,000 CAD (about $9,500 USD) all in. But hey, prices these days are only going up it seems…
You clearly haven't seen California prices.
Anyways, that is what they go for because they are good trucks. Being from the US, thats $12,000US for a 10 year old Tacoma w/120k miles. That's a steal. Here you can find them 2005 2006 models w/250k km for $20000CAD... Anyways, thats just what people pay for them because they are good trucks. If you are more budget minded you could always consider a Nissan Frontier (those years and later) for a lot less. 200.000km isn't much in fact you really can't find them with that low mileage in a lot of places so really on a case by case basis it might be worth the money. I know I rambled on but like I said its a case by case scenario but yes that is what they go for in the real world, but you would be able to negotiate hard because private parties can't give you the legal guarantees of a dealer.
Tacomas have high resale because they are high quality trucks that can run a long, long time.
If you only want to buy one truck and be set, the Tacoma is worth the price. You can get cheaper trucks sure, but not better.
Yes Toyota prices are very inflated. You would think for those prices the vehicles could mow your grass and do your taxes too.
I mean if you know how to weld, they can definitely mow your grass...

It’s not about 'is it really worth', … but it’s your desire that drive it! It’s true, … but, at least, you’re not keeping quiet about it!

The price of anything (Tacomas included) is strictly supply and demand. The Tacoma is in high demand right now because compared to the other electrically bloated garbage out there, they are relatively simple and well made.
They are worth an arm and a leg. Up here in Canada a lot of people who just need a cheap truck pickup an d Ford Ranger instead because they are decent trucks and the are a lot cheaper.
I have a 2005 V6 Tacoma with 228K Ive owned it since new. Its bulletproof as long as you had the frame replacement from Toyota. The frame replacement is extensive and sets the clock back on these.
$9500 with 150K is a pretty damn good deal these days
I would wait and get one with lower mileage. They do come along. But yea, they last forever. At 100k they are just getting broke in. I always research and find out ifit got totaled right after I bought it what would insurance pay. I don’t pay more than that. Good rule.
FYI, since you’re in Canada, … I live near by a "Tacoma Town"

… a Toyota dealer. Just the other day, I drove through it, and in the back, they have eight ( I kid you not!), brand spanking new Tacoma frames stack up in the yard! This is a new record, … usually, there are only three to five. And scrapped frames? Usually a flat bed with three or four, … six is when they haul it away!
