Does anyone have information about what's been happening with Vehicle registrations in CA? I've been noticing a lot more pick ups with commercial plates on even though they're not for commercial use and did some research on it. I couldn't find too much info on it so I came here to see if anyone has some additional insight on it.

Apparently it has been going for years but I just started noticing it now and it applies to any truck registration (new or used) regardless if you're buying a used 2002 Ford ranger, or a brand new 2025 Toyota Tundra. Some people online have mentioned they purchased a camper to avoid the "pick up" classification but that sideways path is no longer possible unless it is a part of the frame of the truck (not bolted on and fixed in place). Doesn't commercial registration cost more than regular registration? If it really is more expensive, it feels like an extra deterrent to not get one in the future.
