Hi Scotty, The timing chain just recently broke my Cadillac SRX 2011 3.0 FWD. I need to get used engine to replace the one that is broke with this Cadillac SRX. What are your suggestions?

I found a junkyard that has a engine for a Cadillac SRX 2011 3.0 FWD. 1st option (tested) grade A with 171,000 miles, hit on the driver side middle of the car (from an auction insurance claim). 2nd option non-tested 131,000 miles grade A no physical damage just missing the front bumper and the headlight (from auction insurance claim) crazy enough which one should I go with?

I personally would go with "none of the above".

Junkyard engines are a huge gamble. Even with the one that was supposedly "tested Grade A" how do you know what kind of tests were made to verify its condition? If you buy a bad engine and pay a mechanic to put it in you're still on the hook for all that labor, including the labor to pull it back out if the used engine has a warranty.

I don't have any other options on my side. Any suggestions other than getting it from a use/junkyard?

Really the best option is to put the money towards a more reliable vehicle.

Thanks for the reply anyways.

Well, you're between a rock and a hard place. If you go junkyard, that's just the wild gamble which may or may not work. And the rebuilt or remanufactured engines are also almost garbage half the time. Unless you can find a new one. You're gambling anyway, it goes. And new ones are generally rather expensive, often more than the car's worth

Thanks for the reply.

If you really are going to get a used engine, get it from a reputable junkyard. I wouldn’t get the 171k engine. I mean how much more life do you think you’re gonna get out of that engine with that mileage? Unless you don’t drive much then I guess it could be ok. For the one with 131k or any other engine regardless whether it’s been tested or not, I would bring a mechanic to check out the engine. Never buy a used engine sight unseen on eBay or wherever.
