I recently replaced my tensioner pulley and was told my AC clutch is going now. Will my car be okay without one? I have a 2005 Ford Freestar
Who told you that and exactly what did they say?
It depends on the nature of the problem. If the clutch just doesn't operate the compressor it should be no problem (aside from the lack of AC). If the bearing in the pulley is bad it will ultimately seize up, tear up the fan belt, and leave you on the side of the road.
On some cars a shorter fan belt can be used to bypass the AC compressor.
I am close with a manager at a Toyota dealership. He helps me with car repairs, free of labor charge. He told me the bearing in the clutch is bad and that for a mechanic, that id a small fix. It just seems big to me cause I would have to remove the engine.
Huh? You'd have to remove the engine to get at the AC compressor?? Of course if the compressor clutch bearing is bad it needs to be replaced, or bypassed with a shorter belt if possible.
